Economic Spiritual-self

Material/Economic Self This concept, rooted in psychology and sociology, suggests that our identity is partly shaped by what we own, buy, and consume. It explores how material possessions become an extension of who we are and how we express ourselves to the world. This means that the things we own—like our clothes, gadgets, house, and car—are part of who we are. We often express our p ersonality, status, and values through what we buy and have. This part of your "Self" is about how your possessions, m oney, and what you buy shape who you are and how you see yourself. It's about your relationship with the material world and your economic status. Definition: The Material Self, as first proposed by psychol ogistWilliam James, refers to everything that a person cal ls "mine." This includes your body, clothes, family, home, and all other possessions. It is the idea that our identit y is extended to include the objects we own and th e resources we control. How it Works: We invest feelings, efforts, and emotions into our possessions. When these possessions are praised, we feel good; when they are criticized or lost, we can feel a sense of l oss or diminished self-worth. Our material possessions beco me symbols of who we are, our achievements, our st atus, and our lifestyle. Exploring "Consumer Behavior" Definition: Consumer behavior is the study of how individ uals, groups, or organizations select, buy, use, and dispose of ideas, goods, and services to satisfy their needs and wa nts. It looks at the decisions consumers make and the fact ors that influence those decisions. - Factors Influencing Consumer Behavior: 1. Psychological Factors: Our perception of products, learni ng from past experiences, motivation (what drives us to buy) , and attitudes (our feelings towards products/brands). 2. Social Factors: Family, friends, reference groups (people we lo ok up to), and social roles influence what and how we buy. 3. Cultural Factors: Our culture, subcultures, and social cla ss dictate our values, perceptions, and behaviors. For exam ple, specific holidays lead to specific purchases. 4. Personal Factors: Age, occupation, economic situation, l ifestyle, personality, and self-concept all play a role. 1. Social Proof / FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) 01 02 - Explanation: You buy something because many people are already buying it or it is very popular. You think, "I should have this too" because you don't want to feel left out. 2. Brand Loyalty - Explanation: You always choose the same brand because you trust it and you are comfortable with it. You feel it is safe and good quality. 03 3. Emotional Buying 04 - Explanation: You buy things not because you need them, but to make yourself happy or to relieve stress. 4. Status Symbol / Image - Explanation: You buy expensive or branded items to show others that you are successful or well-off. You want to create a good impression. 05 5. Habitual Buying - Explanation: You buy things automatically or out of routine because you are used to it, and you don't think too much about it. Connection to Material Self: Consumer behavior is t he action taken by the Material Self.We buy things no t.just for their function, but because they help us expr ess, define, or enhance our Material Self. We choose brands that align with our desired image, or products that reflect our economic standing. For exa mple, buying organic food might reflect a"healthy life style" Material Self. Spiritual Self This aspect of the "Self" explores your search for meaning, purpose, and connection to something beyond your physical or personal bein g. It's about your core beliefs, values, and your place in the univer se. Understanding the "Concept of Spiritualit y" Definition: Spirituality is often described as the search for meaning, pur pose, and connection to something greater than oneself. This "somethin g greater" could be God, a divine being, nature, the universe, or a deep set of personal values and principles. It's about the innate human desire to understand existence and find significance. Key Characteristics:  Personal and Subjective: What is spiritual to one person m ight not be to another. It's a very individual experience.  Beyond Material: It goes beyond what can be seen, touc hed, or scientifically proven.  Source of Meaning & Purpose: Provides a framework for understanding life's challenges, joys, and ultimate questions .  Connection: Often involves feeling connected to others, to the natural world, or to a higher power. Spirituality vs. Religion • Religion: Typically an organized system of beliefs, practice s, rituals, and moral codes shared by a group. It often inv olves a specific deity or deities and a structured communi ty. • Spirituality: Can exist independently of religion. One can be spiritual without being religious, or religious without n ecessarily being deeply spiritual. Many religious people ar e also spiritual, using their religion as a path to spiritual f ulfillment. Viktor Frankl Viktor Frankl: An Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivo r, Frankl is a key figure in understanding the spiritual dimens ion of human existence. His core theory, outlined in his boo k Man’s Search for Meaning, argues that the primary human drive is not pleasure or power, but the desire to find meanin g in life—even in the most difficult circumstances. He believed that we can choose our attitude towards suffering and that meaning can be found through three main ways:by c reating work or doing a deed, by experiencing something or e ncountering someone (such as love), or by the attitude we tak e towards unavoidable suffering. His work emphasizes that th e spiritual self is what allows us to maintain our humanity and hope, even when facing extreme hardship. Core Principle: The "Will to Meaning": Frankl proposed tha t the primary motivational force in human beings is the sear ch for meaning. He argued that humans are not primarily dri ven by the "will to pleasure" (as Freud suggested) or the "w ill to power" (as Adler suggested), but by an innate drive to discover purpose. Freedom of Will: Frankl emphasized that even in the m ost dire circumstances, humans retain the freedom to c hoose their attitude towards their situation. This is the l ast of the human freedoms, and it's what allows people t o rise above their circumstances. Three Ways to Find Meaning by Frankl 1. Through creating a work or doing a deed: Finding meaning thro ugh achievement, contribution, or creating something valuable (e.g., career, art, helping others). 2. Through experiencing something or encountering someone: Fi nding meaning through love, relationships, aesthetic experiences (e. g., appreciating art or nature), or profound moments. 3. Through the attitude we take toward unavoidable suffering: Even in situations where we cannot change our fate (like illness or loss), we can choose our attitude towards that suffering. This choi ce gives dignity and meaning to hardship. THANK YOU
