Unit 5: Work, Power and Energy Intro & Types of Energy (Ch. 16 Quantum) 5.3 Energy: ◼ Is the ability to do work. ◼  Each time work is done, energy is transferred from the object doing the work to the object being worked on. A ◼ Ex. B Energy is transferred from A to C (through B) ◼ Work is the transfer of energy. ◼ So, ◼ Energy measured in Joules (J) ◼ Scalar quantity W = E Types: ◼ 1 When energy is transferred, it may be transformed from one type of energy to another. Gravitational Potential Energy (Eg): ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ Energy that is stored in an object when raised When above the ground = lots of Eg When on ground = zero Eg Depends on mass, height Kinetic Energy (Ek): 2 ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ Energy in a moving object Resting object = zero Ek Moving object = lots Ek Depends on mass, speed Elastic Potential Energy (Ee): 3 ◼ ◼ Energy stored in compressed, stretched or twisted objects Released when objects return to original shape ◼ ◼ ◼ Object compressed or stretched far from equilibrium = more Ee Unstretched or uncompressed object at equilibrium = zero Ee Depends on spring constant, displacement Thermal Energy: 4 ◼ Energy stored in hot objects Radiant Energy: 5 ◼ ◼ Energy transported by electromagnetic waves Ex. Sun, light, microwave Chemical Potential Energy: 6 ◼ Energy stored in chemical bonds Electrical Energy: 7 ◼ Energy from electrical currents Nuclear Energy: 8 ◼ Energy stored in each atom’s nucleus Quantum: HW: pg 356 #1, 2 & 4
