Multiplying Vectors by a Scalar ◼ Geometric Approach ◼ Geometric Approach ◼ y x *NOTE* the new vector can be drawn anywhere… Algebraic Approach The (9,3) of the new vector are NOT coordinates ◼ Examples Given that the arrows are parallel, express the relation between the vectors as an equation. a) b) ◼ Page 154 # 4 A vector can be multiplied by a scalar, k  Ex. v + v + v = 3v ◼ If k  0 then direction same as original vector ◼ If k  0 then direction opp to original vector ◼  Ex. ◼ u if k = −2 then − 2u Scalar applies to magnitude & components  Given k u then magnitude = k u u = (a , b ) then k u = (ka , kb )  Ex. v = (2 , 4 ) then 3v = (6 , 12 ) v = 20 then 3v = 180 = 3 20  Given ◼ Distributive Properties: f k f (u + v) = k u + k v (k1 + k2 )u = k1 u + k2 u ◼ Ex. Given u = (1, 2) ( ) a) 2 v + w v = (1, 0 ) w = (− 3, 1) = 2(1 + −3 , 0 + 1) = (− 4 , 2) b) 3w − 2u = 3 (− 3 , 1) − 2 (1, 2 ) = (− 9 − 2 , 3 − 4) = (− 11 , − 1) draw: ◼ Ex. Simplify 2u + 3u − 5(u + v) + 6v − (v − 2u ) = 2u ◼ Ex. Given v = (− 2, 3) u = (3, 4 ) evaluate a) − 2 u + 3 v = −2 • 5 + 3 • 13 = −10 + 3 13 b) − 3 u − 3u − 3• 5 = 15 = −1
