Understanding Pulvis and Pulveres Preparations

Practicum 8 PULVIS AND PULVERES PREPARATIONS PULVIS AND PULVERES Seruk/pulvis is a homogeneous mixture of two or more powdered drugs, intended for oral or external use. Pulvis preparations have the requirements to be smooth, dry and homogeneous. Undivided powder is calledpulviswhile powder that is divided into dosage units is calledpulveres. INCOMPATIBILITY Incompatibility or non-mixing of drugs is the occurrence of undesirable changes when mixing drug ingredients. There are several types of incompatibility, including physical, chemical and pharmacological incompatibility. PHYSICAL INCOMPATIBILITIES Physical incompatibility is the occurrence of undesirable changes when mixing medicinal substances without any change in their chemical composition. The medicinal ingredients that are mixed do not produce a mixture that is completely the same (homogeneous). Some events that include physical incompatibility include: 1. Melt and become moist powder mixture If two types of dry powder are mixed and melting occurs or it becomes moist/sticky due to the following things: a. Melting point decrease b. Relative vapor pressure drop c. Free crystal water, due to the formation of double salts 2. Insoluble and immiscible 3. Salting, thereby reducing solubility 4. Adsorption CHEMICAL INCOMPATIBILITIES Chemical incompatibility is the occurrence of changes due to chemical reactions occurring when mixing medicinal ingredients. This can be caused by different things and the reaction results vary greatly. Chemical incompatibilities can occur in the form of: 1. Reactions where due to changes on both sides a precipitate is formed that cannot be dissolved/a precipitate is formed 2. Reactions that originate from the influence of substances that react with acids or bases which result in the formation of gas 3. Reactions that occur due to oxidation or reduction. The reaction is greatly influenced by the presence of light 4. Color change 5. Not mixed with Galenika preparations 6. Not stable in solution RECIPE I. PULVIS R/ Salicyl Acid 0,5 Bals.
